10 Reasons I Come to GUCI
By Leah Jacobson, URJ GUCI Counselor
1) Finding huge Jewish Community
At home, some people may have larger or smaller Jewish communities and GUCI gives us the opportunity to know immediately from the beginning that we all share the bond of being Jewish.
2) Forging deep and meaningful friendships
It can be easy to get caught up in technology at home but our camp environment doesn’t allow us to go into the worlds of social media, creating stronger bonds.
3) Bonding with clergy
It’s always fun to see the Rabbis, Cantors and Jewish Educators that are usually in nice clothing to be in a t-shirt and shorts and taking their time to get to know you not only as a congregant but as a person.
4) Dancing at Friday night song session
The energy couldn’t be more intense! It makes me smile knowing that so many people get so excited about praying without even realizing it.
5) Learning to harmonize with friends
Our camp is known for its singing, it sounds like a professional choir every time our camp comes together.
6) Conquering my fears
As a camper, I was terrified of heights and now even though I may not love them, I can still get myself to the top of our 65-foot climbing tower, the Migdal.
7) Learning how to coexist with others
Living in small spaces with others teaches us how to work together and how to communicate when there can be a problem
8) Playing with the dogs
Obviously, the dogs are so sweet, especially with the campers!
9) Learning about myself
As a Jewish teen, I have learned so many valuable things that I don’t believe I would have the same connection to my religion as I do now if it weren’t for GUCI.
10) Learning independence from my parents
Any child that is attached to their parents is normal and this camp teaches them that they don’t need their parents every step of the day.
