Healthy Competition Yields Unity

Yom Sport (Day of Sport) is a full day, camp-wide color war. Yesterday, all of GUCI came together to cheer, run, dance, and celebrate their team’s Pixar character. When asking about favorite aspects of the day, why this day of competition matters, and why they love Yom Sport, all answers pointed to unity. Although we split into four teams and separate from our cabin groups and regularly scheduled programs, this change fosters new and unforeseen friendships. This day of healthy competition strengthens the love of camp and love for each other long after we leave the colors behind.

“I think Yom Sport is important because when we come back from a day of being separated from our cabin mates it makes us appreciate them more. It also unifies the camp.”

Jake, Cabin 13

“I love Yom Sport! It’s a time where campers get to meet people from other units and get to know different counselors. While on the outside we seem separated, the healthy competition brings the whole camp community together. I’ve wanted to be a captain since I started coming here in 2002. It was crazy— a fulfillment of a childhood dream.”

“Yom Sport brings everyone together. It helps us learn more about ourselves and each other. It builds camp ruach (spirit). I love meeting people from other cabins and units and making new friends.”

Sydney, Cabin 8

“I founded Team Penguin because we needed to mix up the teams. It was new, fresh, and fun.”

Tony, Gezah Unit Head, Founder of Team Penguin (unofficial Top Deck team)

“Yom Sport brings out our competitive sides. It’s fun to compete with and against my friends.”

Julia, Cabin 8
