Go Go Garin!

By Carly Chernomorets, Garin Unit Head

Shalom! My name is Carly Chernomorets and I am the Garin Unit Head this summer. Garin is the unit for campers entering 3rd and 4th grade. I’m a rising senior at Brandeis University in Boston where I major in Politics, and I started going to camp 9 years ago. In my free time, I love to work on theatre productions at school and go to concerts.

Garin is the best unit on camp! We spend our days playing, laughing, and getting messy, all while fostering a supportive community for building identity, both Jewish and otherwise. We have some Garin specific programs, such as Omanut (art), Shirah (singing) and special Chugim (elective activities) just for the unit. Our kids love to stay active and moving all the time, so we try to build as much running and dancing as possible into our schedule. Our kids are most excited for special activities such as Yom Sport (color war), Bunk Night, and climbing the Migdal (camp’s 65ft climbing tower).

Having the opportunity to watch a child begin to develop their Jewish identity is invaluable. I live for those moments in which I can tell something has been said in Shiur (Jewish educational programming) which sets off a light bulb in one of my campers’ heads. We strive to feed young minds as many thought-provoking and educational instances in a day as we possibly can, all while being ready to answer questions and help campers sort through their newly-forming ideas and modes of expression. Camp is an amazing place for our kids to blossom into the future of the Jewish people!
