Off the Rim

My name is Josh Kleymeyer, and this will be my fifth summer as a staff member at GUCI. This past year, I was working as an Elementary School computer teacher. This summer, I am excited to lead and improve upon the sports program here at camp. As someone who has played sports all of my life, I came to the program with concrete ideas about how to improve it. I wanted to instill the values and skills I have learned through my years of sports into the campers.

In the new sports program, we teach four sports – one per week. The sports are soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, basketball, and softball. During the first couple of days, we practice drills and learn the rules of each sport. Then, we scrimmage until the end of the week. At the end, we hold a competition, where the scores matter. At the end of the session, the team with the most wins gets a trophy!

The sports program is very beneficial for the campers. It provides structured athletic time every day, promoting a healthy lifestyle. Through it we try to incorporate a regular exercise into the campers’ daily routine, and instill qualities such as teamwork and healthy competition.
