Staff Bone Marrow Registry!!

Tikkun Olam is important at G.U.C.I., and while the campers always take part in some sort of Tikkun Olam project (check back here in a few days to learn more about this year’s program), the staff generally works with the campers toward a similar goal.  However, this year during staff orientation week, we took time to participate in a Tikkun Olam just for the staff.

Ken, representing the organization Gift of Life, came to talk to us about joining a bone marrow registry.  He shared with us how he signed up for a registry while on a trip to Israel and then was later called a few years ago to donate bone marrow.  This donation made him feel great and was a rewarding experience.  Even though there’s a very slim chance that any person on the registry would be an exact bone marrow match, it is still important to develop a large registry.  Additionally, Jews in particular have a hard time finding bone marrow matches, so Gift of Life tries to speak to many different Jewish groups,

The staff then got a chance to join the bone marrow registry.  Many people were happy to donate, especially because they know individuals who needed bone marrow transplants.  Though most likely none of the G.U.C.I. staff will ever be called from the registry, it was still great to help.  For more information about the bone marrow registry, please visit Gift of Life.
