Jeremy Klotz, Camp Director
Jeremy spent his first summer at GUCI in 1975 and has been connected to the camp ever since. He went through the camper ranks, was in the Avodah program, served as a Machon and counselor and was a Unit Head for several summers. For the last 13 years, Jeremy has served GUCI as a lay leader on the Camp Committee, and became the Chair of the committee in May 2013. He has provided strong leadership to GUCI over the years, and has demonstrated his commitment to the camp and to enhancing and improving the GUCI experience for campers, parents and alumni. Jeremy credits GUCI as being instrumental in the development of his Jewish identity and curiosity. He attended Hebrew day school at the Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis, studied abroad at Tel Aviv University during college, and is currently a member of the Wexner Foundation’s Wexner Heritage Program. Prior to his appointment as Camp Director, Jeremy enjoyed a 13-year legal career advising clients on risk management, dispute resolution, employment issues and compliance. He has also worked with several not-for-profit boards managing large projects and fundraising efforts.
Jeremy cherishes GUCI’s community-focused program grounded in Jewish and cultural experiences, and believes deeply in the camp’s mission. He is passionate about creating an environment where campers and staff can grow as both people and Jews. He also believes strongly that a well-balanced program incorporating activities, special interest programming and good old fashioned summertime fun is essential the camp’s long-term success.
Jeremy and his wife, Melissa, are GUCI lifers having met at camp as kids nearly 25 years ago. They have two daughters, Zoe and Maya. Jeremy graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Psychology and has a Juris Doctor from the DePaul University College of Law.
Rachel Waldorf, Senior Assistant Camp Director
Rachel, originally from New Jersey, grew up going to URJ Camp Harlam. She graduated from Rutgers University majoring in both Psychology and Jewish Studies. While in college, she served as a campus chair of Residence Hall Association, where she supervised a committee of students that focused on campus programming and advocacy. She was also a Resident Assistant, which provided great experience mentoring young adults, training on campus security issues, program planning, and marketing. As a Peer Network Engagement Intern for Hillel, and a Reform Campus Entrepreneur Intern for the URJ, Rachel learned how to engage Jewish youth of all ages. After graduating from Rutgers, Rachel participated in a program called Tikkun Olam, which focused on coexistence within Israel. She spent six months volunteering within the Tel Aviv/Jaffa community and taking classes at a secular yeshiva in Tel Aviv. Rachel is very excited to be a part of the GUCI community. She is looking forward to working with staff to help create memorable summer experiences.
Matthew Modansky, Development Manager
Matthew was born and raised in Suffern, New York (A New York City Suburb). In his youth, he balanced his time between playing travel hockey, attending summer camp and being an active member in his Jewish Community. Matthew attended Eisner Camp and participated in NFTY-GER events throughout high school. From 2004 – 2008, he earned his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from West Virginia University. As a freshman in college, Matthew continued playing club hockey and was a founding member of the Jewish Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu (SAM). This was an exciting opportunity for Jewish Students in an unlikely place. After graduation, Matthew accepted a job to work for SAM and later (in 2010) moved to Indianapolis for work . Between 2008 and 2015, Matthew traveled the country until departing staff as Director of Chapter Services. He was involved in recruitment, curriculum development and delivery, alumni engagement as well as fundraising. After leaving SAM, Matthew went on to work for Boy Scouts of America, Crossroads of America Council where he oversaw activities in Indianapolis’ western suburbs. As District Executive, Matthew grew the scouting movement, engaged and trained adult leaders and solicited family donations, which included playing a key role in the council popcorn sales. In his spare time, Matthew is affiliated USA Hockey and the Indiana Hockey Officials Association serving as an on-ice official for all age groups and manages the business operations for the organization.
Matthew is thrilled to bring his experience and his passion to GUCI. Professionally, Matthew has been passionate about making sure our youth have ample opportunities to be safe and successful in all their endeavors. As Development Manager, he will focus on securing financial support through family gifts, grants and donations. Having spent over 15 years at overnight camp as a child, Matthew knows the value a camp experience provides.
At home, Matthew and his lovely wife Anna have two beautiful daughters, Evelyn and Maggie, and two tiny dachshunds, Jake and Oscar. Everyone is excited to become part of the GUCI family.
Svetlana (Orit) Kaplan, Bookkeeper
Svetlana first came to GUCI to become the bookkeeper on September 4, 2007 and from that moment on she knew she was at home. She was born in the Soviet Union and moved to Israel with her family in 1990. While in Israel, she served in the Israeli Army and met her future husband. She graduated with a B.A. in Economics and Finance from The College of Management Academic Studies in Israel.
Svetlana and her husband, Michael, moved to New York City in 2004, then in 2006, they moved to Connecticut, finally ending up in Carmel, Indiana in 2007. They have 2 children Brad and Dan. Svetlana enjoys seeing how much Brad loves GUCI and how it has become his second home. She looks forward to the day when Dan is old enough to come and spend his summers at GUCI.
Michael Mintz, Registrar
Michael grew up in Cincinnati and has been attending GUCI since 2004. During his 5 summers on staff, Michael has worked as a machon (first year counselor), counselor, and Avodah Unit Head. To this day, Michael’s closest friends are the people he met here at GUCI. He graduated from The Ohio State University majoring in Hospitality Management. During his time in Columbus, Michael was active in the school’s Jewish community, joining a Jewish fraternity and working the kosher kitchen at Ohio State’s Hillel. After school, Michael moved to Dillon, Colorado and worked as a ski instructor for children ages 7-14 and he describes the experience as camp on skis. In the mountains is where Michael realized his passion in working with today’s youth. What a better way to follow that passion than coming back to the place where it all began. Michael is extremely excited to help create that experience of a lifetime.
