GUCI’s staff is one of the reasons camp is so much fun throughout the summer! Each staff member contributes to the camp community and works towards creating an unforgettable summer for each camper that walks through the gates. Below are the positions that make up this staff. General Description for ALl GUCI staff members

In addition to the various specific tasks assigned to each member of the GUCI staff, there are certain expectations and responsibilities that are required of all staff members, regardless of their duties. All staff members are expected to satisfy the qualifications and fulfill the responsibilities outlined below.

Qualifications:

  • Desire and ability to work with children in a camp setting
  • Able to balance the needs of campers, camp, and themselves
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance
  • Willingness to adapt behaviors as necessary to continue growing in your position and role in camp
  • Be of good character, integrity, and adaptability
  • Exceptional communication skills with both staff and campers
  • Well-developed sense of responsibility, good judgment, and common sense
  • Be an adult role model of how to live responsibly and maturely
  • Understand the potential of young children
  • The ability to maintain the stamina and endurance needed to succeed in an immersive camp environment
  • Ability to help campers develop Jewishly by being a positive Jewish role model
  • A parental attitude – must respect the feelings of both children and their parents at all times

Machon - 1st year Counselor

Supervisor: Unit Head & Machon Director

Qualifications: 

  • Skill and ability in working with children. 
  • Ability to communicate with both campers and peers 
  • Sufficient maturity level to safely guide impressionable campers through their stay at camp 
  • Ability to serve as an adult role model for all campers 
  • Ability to give and accept guidance and support 
  • Willingness and ability to take full responsibility for the lives of campers through common sense, safety-consciousness, and high moral character, which are all required 
  • A willingness and ability to ask for help 
  • Ability to assist in activities, both leading and supporting 
  • Ability to work with a variety of staff members and campers in a calm, collected, manner at all times 

Responsibilities: 

  • Directly responsible for all campers living in one’s assigned cabin including: day-to-day involvement with campers, teaching of camp rules, policies and traditions 
  • Directly responsible for campers in unit (including one’s cabin) during all unit or all camp programs 
  • Help every camper make friends, become acclimated to life at GUCI, grow towards his or her potential while becoming part of the camp community 
  • Responsible for the health, safety and happiness of ALL campers at ALL times 
  • Act as “early-warning system” for campers experiencing problems 
  • Ensure campers exercise good hygiene and health practices. Notify appropriate staff members of concerns 
  • Help campers keep track of belongings 
  • Directly responsible for cleanliness of the cabin  
  • Participate regularly and enthusiastically in all programming 
  • Teach or assist in unit and elective activities; always be an active participant 
  • Plan and lead cabin activities 
  • Take an active role in evening programs and other unit-based programs 
  • Attend in-camp training sessions and staff meetings as required 
  • Be familiar with all emergency procedures and first aid 
  • Attend all Machon meetings and participate in assigned activities for the Machon program 
  • Ensure self-hygiene and health practices 
  • Follow additional instructions and tasks given by Leadership Team, as needed

madrich - 2nd year counselor

Supervisor: Unit Head

Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of child development concepts
  • Ability to communicate with both campers and peers
  • Be sufficiently mature to guide impressionable campers through their stay at camp
  • Ability to give and accept guidance and support
  • A willingness and ability to ask for help
  • Ability to assist in activities, both leading and supporting
  • Be able to work with a variety of staff members and campers in a calm, collected, manner at all times

Responsibilities:

  • Directly responsible for all campers living in one’s assigned cabin or tent including: day-to-day involvement with campers, teaching of camp rules, policies and traditions
  • Help every camper make friends, becoming acclimated to life at GUCI, grow towards their potential while becoming part of the camp community
  • Responsible for the health, safety and happiness of ALL campers at ALL times
  • Act as “early-warning system” for campers experiencing problems
  • Ensure campers exercise good hygiene and health practices. Notify appropriate staff members of concerns
  • Help campers keep track of belongings
  • Directly responsible for cleanliness of the cabin
  • Participate regularly and enthusiastically in all programming
  • Teach or assist in unit and elective activities; always be an active participant
  • Plan and lead cabin activities
  • Take an active role in evening programs and other unit-based programs
  • Attend in-camp training sessions and staff meetings as required

Rosh Madrich - 3rd Year Counselor

Supervisor: Unit Head 

Qualifications: 

  • Two years as a counselor, preferably at Goldman Union Camp Institute. 
  • Skill and ability in working with children. 
  • Ability to communicate with both campers and peers 
  • Sufficient maturity level to guide impressionable campers and more junior staff through their stay at camp 
  • Ability to serve as an adult role model for all campers 
  • Ability to give and accept guidance and support 
  • Willingness and ability to take full responsibility for the lives of campers through common sense, safety-consciousness, and high moral character, which are all required 
  • A willingness and ability to ask for help 
  • Ability to assist in activities, both leading and supporting 
  • Ability to work with a variety of staff members and campers in a calm, collected, manner at all times 

Responsibilities: 

  • Directly responsible for all campers living in one’s assigned cabin including: day-to-day involvement with campers, teaching of camp rules, policies and traditions 
  • Directly responsible for campers in unit (including one’s cabin) during all unit or all camp programs

  • Assist the Unit Head in carrying out administrative responsibilities including, but not exclusive to, scheduling, resolution of unit issues, programming and supervision of staff.    
  • Assist the Unit Head in running programs, as needed 
  • Live in cabin as a role model for other counselors and as a means of general supervision within the camper living areas 
  • Assist in the planning and facilitating special programs in the unit. (in Garin, Shoresh, and Gezah, helping to plan days off, and in Anaf helping with Kesher)   
  • Ensure self-hygiene and health practices 
  • Follow additional instructions and tasks given by Leadership Team, as needed

Assistant Specalists

Supervisor: Head Specialist or Assistant Director 

Assistants will be considered for the following areas of camp: Arts & Crafts, Drama, Dance, Ceramics, Farming, Fitness, Nosaf, Migdal (Alpine Tower) and Sports. 

These positions help the Head Specialist with creation of lessons plans, site maintenance, and supporting staff leading activities for campers. Specialists should have prior knowledge or experience in their specialty area. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Skill and ability in working with children. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with campers and fellow staff 
  • Ability to serve as a role model for all campers 
  • Ability to accept guidance and support 
  • A willingness and ability to ask for help 
  • Training and experience corresponding with needs of teaching in specialty area 
  • When required, hold relevant certifications in activity area 
  • Strong enthusiasm for and broad-based knowledge of assigned specialty 
  • Ability to follow defined teaching requirements, developing own methods of presentation to campers
  • Preference will be given to those who are not participating in the Machon program

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop the necessary lesson plans prior to executing each activity. 
  • Set up and clean up for all activity periods. 
  • Lead and coordinate activities for all age groups, as assigned by the Department Head, as scheduled for each unit. Maintain daily record of activity lesson plan 
  • Maintain a safe and clean activity area 
  • Assist in all activity areas within your specialty department as well as within your unit 
  • Assist in coordination of activities for all age groups, as assigned by the Head Specialist, as scheduled for each unit. 
  • Be available for cabin activities whenever possible 
  • Act as general resource for other Camp activities relating to your specialty 
  • Exercise good judgment and safety consciousness at all times. Act as role-model for safety with campers 
  • Directly responsible for most maintenance and upkeep of facilities and supplies necessary for assigned specialty 
  • Participate in other Camp programming. All specialists are assigned to units and cabins and should be with assigned units/cabins when they do not have direct programming responsibilities — especially at meals, song sessions, services, and evening programs. Sitting with cabins and interacting with campers is a must 
  • Directly responsible for all campers living in one’s assigned cabin: day-to-day involvement with campers as individuals, imparting of camp rules, policies and traditions, help every camper make friends, become acclimated to life at GUCI, grow towards his or her potential and become part of the community 
  • Responsible for the health, safety and happiness of ALL campers at ALL times 
  • Act as “early-warning system” for campers with issues or concerns 
  • Attend in-camp training sessions and staff meetings as required 

  

Designated Supervisors: Unit Head and Head Specalist. 

 

Please note: all counselor specialists live in a bunk with campers and are part of a unit staff team, contributing to sleep in and general supervision needs 

Program Unit Head - Garin, Shoresh, & Gezah

Supervisor: Program Director & Camp Director

Qualifications: 

  • Evidence of leadership skill and capacity 
  • Strong background and experience in camping and/or related fields 
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in Camp setting 
  • Basic understanding of child and adolescent development concepts 
  • Ability to creatively plan & schedule programs and activities, and to maximize the skills & talents of staff members 
  • Ability to give & take constructive criticism 
  • A college graduate (preferred) or undergraduate 
  • Must be self-starter and able to work with a minimum of supervision 
  • Must have leadership skills, ability to motivate, manage, and counsel 
  • ability to act and think independently, especially on the spur of the moment, is crucial 

Responsibilities: 

  • Attend meetings as a member of Camp’s Leadership. Help formulate and implement policy. Prepare and submit required materials 
  • Directly responsible for planning, preparation and implementation of all programming for assigned unit; assign staff members to various teams and work closely with specialists to plan programs for your unit 
  • Directly responsible for consistently having unit’s program supply requisitions turned in. 
  • Whenever possible, incorporate unit/department staff members in program planning and leadership. 
  • Make all site & supply arrangements 
  • Coordinate activities of cabins in the unit: cabin activities, staff days off, etc. 
  • Act as role model for unit staff. Be a ―counselor’s counselor, assisting unit/department staff with problems, questions and support 
  • Regularly evaluate the performance of unit/department staff members, following the policies of staff evaluation 
  • Act on behalf of unit/department on issues involving Camp community 
  • Run daily unit staff meetings 
  • Be directly involved with all campers and staff in unit. Ongoing camper and staff problems are of particular concern. Communicate with the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director on key matters. Will be called upon to communicate directly with parents. 
  • Mediate and settle disputes of misunderstandings between campers and campers, campers and counselors, counselors and counselors. 
  • Prepare and submit report forms, injury reports, parent letters and evaluations as needed. 

  

Please note: all Unit Heads live in shared housing

Head Specialists

Supervisor: Assistant Director

There will be Lead Specialists for the following areas of camp: Art, Sports, Aquatics, and Alpine Tower (Migdal), Farm, Drama, Music, Photography, Dance, Archery, Creative Writing, Wilderness, Fitness, T’filah, Songleader.  They will coordinate, schedule and supervise for their respective specialty and the site associated with their area.

Qualifications:

  • Evidence of leadership skill and capacity
  • Strong background and experience in camping
  • Strong background and experience in your specific area of supervision
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in Camp setting
  • Ability to creatively plan & schedule programs and activities with maximum efficiency, and to maximize the skills & talents of staff members
  • Ability to give & take constructive criticism
  • Must be self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Must have demonstrated successful leadership skills, ability to motivate, manage, and counsel
  • Previous OSRUI experience preferred
  • College graduate (or equivalent age) preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit required materials including lesson plans and rain plans for all activities in your area weekly
  • Directly responsible for planning, preparation and implementation of all programs for assigned specialty; serve as the creative force for your programs, assign staff members to program teams and work closely with counselors and Rashei Eidot in planning and executing programs for your specialty
  • Directly responsible for consistently having necessary program supply requisitions turned in according to the camp requisition policy
  • Guiding your staff to be able to effectively support programming in their activity areas
  • Supervise and engage Avodah interns as appropriate
  • Make all site & supply arrangements, including having a cleanly and organized site
  • Coordinate activities of all groups participating in your specialty’s activities at a given time: allocation of space, staff, etc
  • Act as role model for your assigned specialty staff. Assist your staff with problems, questions and support
  • Regularly evaluate the performance of staff members within your specialty, following the policies of staff evaluation
  • Act on behalf of your specialty on issues involving Camp community
  • Be directly involved with all campers and staff in your specialty. Communicate with the Camp Director, Associate Director and Assistant Director on key matters.
  • Be a presence and an advocate for camp wide policy.

Please note: Lead Specialists live in staff housing.

Avodah Unit Head

Supervisor: Camp Director

Qualifications: 

  • Evidence of leadership skill and capacity 
  • Strong background and experience in camping and/or related fields 
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in Camp setting 
  • Basic understanding of child and adolescent development concepts 
  • Ability to creatively plan & schedule programs and activities, and to maximize the skills & talents of staff members 
  • Ability to give & take constructive criticism 
  • A college graduate (preferred) or undergraduate 
  • Must be self-starter and able to work with a minimum of supervision

  • Serve as a member of the camp supervisory staff, attend meetings each afternoon, involved in the formulation and implementation of camp policies as they affect campers and staff members and assisting in enforcement of these policies. 
  • Run the avodah program 
  • Supervision of assistant avodah unit heads 
  • To participate in activities and supervise the work of the avodahnikim 
  • Provide a safe and healthy environment for each avodahnik 
  • Responsible for scheduling of daily activities and summer long activities 
  • Communicate and work with all direct supervisors of avodah crews (kitchen steward, camp K’ton director, pool director, Office manager, Migdol director, etc.)  
  • Promote a sense of community within the unit as well as with the entire camp

Program Director

Primary responsibility for all educational, social and elective programming. Directly supervises and mentors all programming Unit Heads. Has primary responsibility for daily schedule and session calendar. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Camp Director and/or Assistant Camp Director. This position requires a high level of motivation, organization and enthusiasm.

Education Director

Works in close consultation with Program Director, Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director and Faculty to develop an educational, age appropriate Judaic curriculum for each of the two-4 week sessions. Oversees educational programming by Unit Heads and Counselors and plans all camp educational programs. May oversee and assist with developing Ivrit (Hebrew) and Tefillah programming.

Operations Manager

Supervisor: Camp Director

Qualifications: 

  • Current college junior age or older 
  • Evidence of leadership skill and capacity 
  • Strong background and experience in camping and/or related fields 
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in Camp setting 
  • Skilled at building relationships with a variety of stakeholders 
  • Ability to creatively plan, schedule and execute programming that helps build strong relationships and a positive staff community 
  • Must be self-starter and able to work with a minimum of supervision 
  • Must have leadership skills, ability to motivate, manage, and counsel 

Responsibilities: 

  • Build staff community: 
    • Partner with professional staff to plan and execute community building activities beginning with pre-camp training and throughout the summer 
    • Create, manage and circulating a master staff activities calendar 
    • Planning and organizing activities for staff that are available in camp every night (such as in athletics, arts, outdoor adventure, etc.) that may be facilitated by others 
    • Develop a plan for “on camp” days off 
  • Help support staff with their needs to better enable them to effectively perform their duties: 
    • Help staff members navigate challenges related to: 
    • Time off 
    • Understanding camp policies and procedures as they relate to staff 
    • Dealing with supervisory relationships (such as approaching a unit head or director) 
    • Quality-of-life matters that may require a conversation with the camper care team 
  • Serve as liaison to Professional Staff in their efforts to provide a fulfilling professional experience: 
    • Keep your “fingers on the pulse” of the staff, keeping professional staff informed of your observations 
    • Aid in communicating schedule, program, policy and other changes to staff 
    • Facilitate a weekly staff survey and report to the professional staff the results 
  • Support overall program of camp: 
    • Work in partnership with the Program Supervisor to assist with special programs, all-camp events and other projects and support staff as they develop meaningful evening programs and cabin activities 
Staff Experience Specalist

Supervisor: Camp Director

Qualifications: 

  • Current college junior age or older 
  • Evidence of leadership skill and capacity 
  • Strong background and experience in camping and/or related fields 
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in Camp setting 
  • Skilled at building relationships with a variety of stakeholders 
  • Ability to creatively plan, schedule and execute programming that helps build strong relationships and a positive staff community 
  • Must be self-starter and able to work with a minimum of supervision 
  • Must have leadership skills, ability to motivate, manage, and counsel 

Responsibilities:

Communications Director

Primary responsibility for writing, receiving, posting blog posts, and managing and maintaining camp social media over the summer. Social media experience required.

Driver

Supervisor: Business and Operations Associate/Office Manager

Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid Driver’s License (International Driver’s License if from outside the United States)
  • Ability to communicate with others and abide by all rules and policies
  • Experience in driving for long periods of time in unknown areas
  • Be on call to drive at any time, for any purpose (Drivers who live in camp)
  • Be available throughout the summer, as needed (Drivers who are hourly employees)

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain clean and safe camp vehicles
  • Be the primary camp driver both in camp and out of camp for all driving needs
  • Manage a daily schedule in partnership with the Business and Operations Associate to ensure efficient partnership
  • Drive in a safe manner at all times

Please note: If the Driver is in residence at camp, they will live in staff housing.

Maintenance

Supervisor: Camp Physician (clinical matters) / Health Center Administrator (scheduling)

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in food service environment is preferred 
  • Professional, articulate, friendly, and punctual 
  • Possesses and exhibits the drive to provide exceptional customer service 
  • Full time flexible hours are required (able to work days, nights, weekends, holidays) 
  • Must be able to stand/walk for 8 hours; bend, push, pull; lift 30 lbs 
  • Professional appearance appropriate for Camp Harlam 
  • Able to work at a rapid pace while maintaining attention to detail; ability to multi-task 
  • Good supervisory, teaching and motivational skills 
  • Good communication skills 

Responsibilities: 

  • Anticipate campers’ and staff’s (customers’) needs and ensure that service meets/exceeds expectations to ensure a memorable and pleasant dining experience 
  • Maintain communication with and support the Food Service Director, Head Chef and Sous Chef 
  • Inspect dining room, table settings, chairs, floors, PA system, proper maintenance, cleanliness and safety. Takes immediate action to correct any issues 
  • Update daily/meal menu board as directed by the Food Service Director, Head Chef and/or Sous Chef 
  • Ensure customer entrance to dining room and seating is orchestrated in a calm, organized and timely manner 
  • Check tables throughout service times for customer satisfaction, resolve customer needs 
  • Enforce camp rules, regulations and policies 
  • Conduct pre-meal meetings with Counselor/Camper Service Teams 
  • Ensure dining room supplies are stocked. Reports any supply shortages to the Food Service Director 
  • Assist with any special event set up and break down 
  • Coordinates and supervises food distribution between kitchen and service staff 
  • Review daily and weekly menus, meal counts, special diet offerings and other applicable announcements with Food Service Director, Head Chef or Sous Chef 
  • Lead to achieve desired results in high quality service and experience for our customers 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned 

In absence of the Food Service Director, Head Chef and Sous Chef, may serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) and handle opening or closing procedures. 

  

Designated Supervisor: Food Service Director, Head Chef, Camp Director, and Associate Director 

Program Specalists

Also known as Random Top Deck. Every camp needs extra hands to assist in day to day things like coverage, program planning, and other miscellaneous tasks. Will work with the directors to assist in planning and facilitating of larger programs and events such as Yom Sport and Opening/Closing Day.

Photographer/Videographer

Supervisor: Camp Physician (clinical matters) / Health Center Administrator (scheduling)

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in food service environment is preferred 
  • Professional, articulate, friendly, and punctual 
  • Possesses and exhibits the drive to provide exceptional customer service

  • Professional appearance appropriate for Camp Harlam 
  • Able to work at a rapid pace while maintaining attention to detail; ability to multi-task 
  • Good supervisory, teaching and motivational skills 
  • Good communication skills

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in food service environment is preferred 
  • Professional, articulate, friendly, and punctual 
  • Possesses and exhibits the drive to provide exceptional customer service 
  • Full time flexible hours are required (able to work days, nights, weekends, holidays) 
  • Must be able to stand/walk for 8 hours; bend, push, pull; lift 30 lbs 
  • Professional appearance appropriate for Camp Harlam 
  • Able to work at a rapid pace while maintaining attention to detail; ability to multi-task 
  • Good supervisory, teaching and motivational skills 
  • Good communication skills 

Responsibilities: 

  • Anticipate campers’ and staff’s (customers’) needs and ensure that service meets/exceeds expectations to ensure a memorable and pleasant dining experience 
  • Maintain communication with and support the Food Service Director, Head Chef and Sous Chef 
  • Inspect dining room, table settings, chairs, floors, PA system, proper maintenance, cleanliness and safety. Takes immediate action to correct any issues 
  • Update daily/meal menu board as directed by the Food Service Director, Head Chef and/or Sous Chef 
  • Ensure customer entrance to dining room and seating is orchestrated in a calm, organized and timely manner 
  • Check tables throughout service times for customer satisfaction, resolve customer needs

Nurse

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be licensed in Indiana, or able to obtain a single-state endorsement RN license in Indiana
  • Strong communication skills
  • Compassionate approach to supporting children in a camp environment

Responsibilities:

  • Administer routine medications to campers in multiple practice environments (health center, outdoors, etc.)
  • Apply basic first aid to campers or staff
  • Clinical assessment of campers and staff members during daily morning clinic, in partnership with camp physician
  • Contribute to ongoing organization and planning in the Health Center, including packing medications for upcoming trips, preparing for new camp sessions, coordination with physician and pharmacy for any newly ordered medications, monitoring supplies, etc.
  • Manage and support unit Medics and pass out all medication, including OTC
  • Manage parent communication in partnership with the Camp Care Coordinator (Infirmary Administrator)
  • Manage health center facility including supplies, staff scheduling, files, etc. (Infirmary Administrator)
Camp Care Team

Supervisor: Camp Care Director

Qualifications:

  • Understand camper and staff needs
  • Strong communication skills with campers, staff, and parents
  • Extensive knowledge of social, behavioral and developmental issues with children and adolescents
  • Experience working with young people
  • Social work/Psychology or equivalent experience preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Support the unit heads and counselors in their work with campers, under the direction of the Camp Director. This includes discipline problems, moments of sadness, interpersonal issues, and adjusting to the camp environment
  • Work with campers who have been identified by special needs committee along with their counselors and unit head to proactively manage issues and create a positive camp environment Ensure consistent communication to all necessary parties including the Director, Associate Director, Assistant Director, Unit Heads, Health Center staff, and others
  • Be present in camper units daily, including staff meetings, to support unit heads and staff
  • Advise program areas and specialists on how to accommodate individual camper needs in different activities
  • Participate in the process of parent phone calls for camper care related issues
  • Participate in the documentation of camper care issues, parent phone calls and camper interactions that take place during the summer
  • Participate in meetings to update Camp Director on camper issues daily
  • Serve as a positive role model for staff
