What is Rookie Weekend?
Your 1st – 4th grader is invited to a mini-camp experience geared towards first-time campers! Taking place at Goldman Union Camp Institute in Zionsville, Indiana, September 24-25; campers will get a taste of a summer at GUCI.
From a traditional GUCI Havdalah, to Bunk-Night-esque activities (grilling out, s’mores and fun activities), and even a chance to climb the Migdal (our climbing tower), it’s a great introduction to camp.
If my child doesn't go to GUCI, can they still come to the event?
YES! This event is designed for first-time campers, so it does not matter if your child has been to any camp, or even a sleepover, this is a great introduction to camp.
If your child HAS been a camper at GUCI before, they are still welcome to join! We encourage you to invite one of their friends – who might not yet experienced the magic of GUCI – to go with them and share the experience.
What are the COVID-19 policies for the event? Will my child be sent home?
All staff and participants are required to be up-to-date with their COVID-19 vaccines (including boosters), and will be required to provide proof of vaccination. Up-to-date is defined by the CDC; you can find details here.
We will also ask all staff and participants to take an at-home rapid COVID-19 test prior to coming to camp, and to send us the results. Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 will not be permitted to attend the event. We HIGHLY recommend testing 3-4 times in the week leading up to the event to ensure there are no surprises.
We can care for some illnesses and minor injuries in camp (upset stomach, bee stings, low grade fever, etc.) in our infirmary. Depending on the severity (examples: broken bone, positive COVID test with high fever), we will ask you to come pick up your child if their medical issue is impacting their ability to participate in the event programming. We will work with families to make reasonable arrangements if necessary.
How will my child get to GUCI?
You are welcome to bring your child or carpool with another family. Dropoff is from 11 a.m. – Noon on Saturday, September 24 and pickup on Sunday, September 25 is between 10-10:30 a.m.
What does my child need to bring with them?
We will provide a packing list with details, but plan on them bringing bedding, a towel, toiletries, pajamas, a change of clothes and something to get messy in!).
What will my child be doing at camp?
We will have a variety of activities including a GUCI-style Havdalah, electives (art, archery, Migdal/Climbing Tower), and much more!
What if my child takes medication?
We will have a medical professional onsite throughout the weekend to handle medication disbursement.
What if my child has special dietary needs?
Our kitchen is prepared to handle all dietary restrictions. Just let us know in the paperwork and we will make sure your child has plenty to eat!
Can I come and learn about camp too?
YES! All parents are invited for bagels with the Directors on Sunday at 9 a.m. Take a tour of camp and get all of your questions answered.
How much does this cost?
The fee for the experience is $130. This includes food, programming and merchandise. If your camper is new to GUCI, they will go home with a $200 certificate to use at camp for either summer 2023 or summer 2024.
