A Reflection on Camperhood

By: Sarah Naiman, second year Anaf camper

Writing this is one of the most difficult tasks I have every completed during my past eight summers at GUCI. How can I possibly describe the greatest summers of my list within a few sentences?

After many drafts, revisions, and edits, I realize that the answer is simple: I cannot. There is no possible way I can describe 196 days full of Project rehearsals, free swims, Ivrit, and chugim. Instead, I can only articulate what I refer to as “the GUCI feeling.”

GUCI itself is hardly even a word, and it is more than just a place— it’s more of a nostalgia filled emotion. It can be felt standing half-awake with all of camp during roll call, rejoicing over pizza bagels (well, technically pizza rounds) for lunch. It’s feeling incredible ruach during final cheers on Yom Sport, celebrating with best friends on top of the Migdal, looking up at the infamous “GUCI green” trees in the Beit Tifillah during Saturday morning services, and finally by looking into the watery eyes of cabin mates singing “We” during friendship circle on final night. As my final summer as a camper comes to a close, I know I will always remember and cherish GUCI. The feeling these memories provide me will never fade. GUCI is my home, no matter what the future holds or where it takes me.
